Background:
Molly Hensley is a former teacher and mother of 3. She aspires to help other mothers capture cherishable memories. She understands how stressful it is to plan good photos, so she works to make it a positive experience. She taught 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade, and has a love for taking care of children and motherhood. Her photography works to capture that love.
Photography style
Her photos have a very soft and vanilla vibe to them. You could say they're rather warm and cozy. They’re calmed and balanced with a very gentle energy to them. Some of the ones I looked at have a similar structure to some still life examples, but different color pallets. The colors mainly consisted of pastels and white backgrounds
Beliefs and philosophies
She takes her own personal and shared experiences with other women, motherhood, and families and incorporates it into her art. She celebrates the life of children with her newborn and maternity photos, and puts light on the joy of family through her family portraits. She wants to support other mothers and help capture beautiful moments for them. Her artwork expresses a big part of her identity and her passion. It also shows a warm, nurturing personality and heart.
Influence
I took inspiration from her pastel and vanilla color palette while taking my photos. My room is very pastel themed, so it fits. I haven't had time to redecorate it since I was 5, if that wasn’t already obvious. I saw all her photos with babies and decided to take photos of my own baby (my dog) for this. The fluffy little guy already fits the color palette, so he was a perfect model for this project.
Compare and contrast
One obvious difference between her photos and mine is that hers were taken with human babies, mine were taken with fluff babies. Another difference is that she takes photos of other people’s children, while I took photos of my own. I think the aesthetic of her photos leans more towards being vanilla with a mix of coquette while mine is more coquette with a mix of vanilla, but same general aesthetic. We both used the same general color palette of white and pastels. One more similarity is that we both are displaying motherhood, just in different forms.
Personal artist statement
When I took photos of little Fuzzball, I should’ve guessed he wouldn’t exactly be the most cooperative. While he is an adorable little guy, he is also a bundle of energy. It took awhile to get him to hold still, and he kept trying to lick the camera whenever I would try to take a photo. I tried to keep a very soft lighting, so I just took these by my bedroom window. I was laughing at my silly little dog the whole time, it took some time, but I think we got some sweet photos together.
